HFCS vs Sucrose

Much of the controversy on high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) rests on whether it is "sugar" (in fact it is composed of two sugars: 45% glucose and 55% fructose), and whether it is less healthful than "natural sugar" (sucrose).

In the body, sucrose (a disaccharide – "two sugars") reacts with a water molecule to form two monosaccharide molecules – glucose and fructose in a 50% - 50% ratio. In the animation below, you can see an idealized version of this process.
