Success Stories

I wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know that I have been using Atomsmith in my classes for the last week and it's working beautifully.  I've been amazed how easy it is to pop models up on the screen as we are talking about them in class.  We've started our units on molecular structure and intermolecular forces and Atomsmith has been a great teaching tool.  I've been very happy with it.  The kids love it as well.

. . . The most important thing Atomsmith has allowed me to do is take more of a discovery approach to some of our topics. For example, I put up a collection of water molecules and started the simulation and then a collection of methane molecules and did the same. This led us into a discussion of polarity and electro-negativity, a lot of which they could figure out with very little prodding from me. Simple stuff like that can make a big difference.

I'm a huge fan of your software and my students and I use it regularly to visualize molecules and their interactions.  For my students (and me), it has changed the way we think about molecules.

Just want to let you know that we did get Atomsmith installed fine, and it’s working well.  I love it so far.  Kids today in class (third day in looking at atomic structure as a class) have said it really is cool, and helps them visualize things much better.  They like it.

As a computational chemist working for the Army High Performance Computing Research Center, I was asked to prepare a one-week course for high school students that introduced them to the concept of using a computer to solve problems in chemistry.  I needed to be able to provide background information on the problem to be solved, demonstrate how to solve the problem and help the students prepare a presentation of their results in a very short time.  I knew this challenge could only be met with the help of an innovative software package that allows users to view and interact with a chemical system in a tangible way.

I previewed a number of software packages, but only The Atomsmith Classroom provided the functionality I required and was both easy to learn and easy to use.  Atomsmith is a software package that brings chemistry to life.  The tools provided in Atomsmith allow users to understand complex chemical concepts such as bonding and reactivity with a new level of insight.  The examples are clear and informative.  My one-week high school course was deemed a great success.  Atomsmith was the key ingredient to that success.  To quote one of my former students:  “Atomsmith is awesome.”

I used your gases unit to teach the gas laws, phases of matter and kinetic theory to my Gen Chem class.  It worked great.  Seeing the molecules hitting the box walls and watching the pressure gauge as they changed the temperature was such a great visual for my students.  The gas laws became intuitive.  Also, heating and cooling the water molecules, with the hydrogen bonds turned on, was just excellent for showing gas to solid transitions.  They had no idea that molecules still vibrate -- even when frozen solid.

The Lewis Structure Lab works great as a pre-test review tool.  It really helps my students reinforce this skill in an efficient manner (without the time-consuming drawing and re-drawing), and they actually enjoy using it.

Your modeling software has saved my chemistry classes from the omnipresent molecule-model-eating monster (a relative of the dreaded sock-eating monster).  Our model kits were always missing pieces for which I had to perpetually order replacements.

. . . The biggest obstacle that I face is teachers thinking that using technology is simply going to be more work.  With Atomsmith, I changed that perception.

I never knew that molecules spun around like that -- wow.

In general, I don't like writing, but when I look back over the journal assignments, it’s great to see how much I’ve learned.

When my teacher talked about liquids and the fact that bonds between the molecules break and reform, I never really got it.  Then I saw the water molecules with the hydrogen bonds . . . that's what she was talking about.
